The Icing on Top: Wedding Cake Inspiration
Even if you’re not a dessert person (or dessert couple, as it happens), cake is a staple of most weddings we see at Jane Rae. Some couples have a small cutting cake but serve different desserts for their guests. Other couples leave the cake out of the equation altogether! We’ve got some cutting cake focused inspo for you because it is the belle of the sweet treat ball.

If you’ve been online looking for cake inspo in the last few months, you’ve probably seen a plethora of adorable piped cakes popping up. These detailed cakes are the perfect option if you want a photo-friendly dessert. They look especially great under flash photography where the shadows emphasize the texture on the cake. We took the the piping trend a step beyond the retro trend to dream up this cherry cake with Blush Bakery. A border isn’t the only place you can add texture. These piped pearls create a trend-forward take on luxury.

Another vintage touch that’s making a comeback is the classic cake topper. This can be an especially sweet option if you want to add as many sentimental elements to your wedding day as possible. You can use it to show off your personality as a couple, your pets, or your family connections. Thanks to the wide world of Etsy, you can find or make a custom cake topper that exactly fits your vision. Or, if you want to honor your mother but her dress isn’t your favorite, how about reusing your parents’ cake topper?

As a floral designer, I am absolutely biased toward a floral heavy cake display. Cake meadows like these are a great option if you want to use the cake as a focal point. If it’s going to be in front of the dance floor or on a pedestal separate from other desserts, a cake meadow can elevate the cake in your overall design. I would recommend a cake meadow if you really want people to remember the cake and the moment you and your new spouse cut it.

Let’s say you like the look of a cake meadow but want something simpler and more cost effective. Placing bud vases around your cake stand can have a lighter feel, and it’s a much less intensive design to create. This is also a great option if your wedding is evolving throughout the day. The cake can be a focal point until you cut it, but then those bud vases can move to a late night snack table or another part of your venue for the next phase of the party.

The great thing about cake is that it’s hard to go wrong. If you want a delicious dessert and the design isn’t as important for you, Costco sheet cake is a crowd pleaser every time. No matter what you choose, the important thing is that you can enjoy it with your new spouse and the people you love. Happy designing and even happier eating!
